The Council and the NHS discuss local healthcare for Seaford

Submitted on 20 September 2016 by Council Officers

Seaford Town Councillors and members of the public met with representatives from the NHS to discuss the local healthcare services and provisions, at a meeting that proved informative for all parties.

Board members from East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (ESHT) and the NHS Eastbourne, Hailsham and Seaford Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) provided verbal presentations on the role and responsibilities of their organisations and the involvement with the local area. The CCG is the statutory body that among many things, governs and commissions the local healthcare providers. ESHT is the service provider for many of the local health services including Eastbourne DGH, Hastings Conquest Hospital and other community services.

Having been declared in special measures by the Care Quality Commission in 2015, not across all areas but in particular with ‘being well lead’ and ‘governance’, ESHT is working towards many improvements and have identified priorities for the coming year, including outpatients improvements, end of life care, transport, sepsis, medication management, reducing ward moves and preparing for the follow up CQC inspection in October.

Whilst there was no news forthcoming of immediate changes or additions on the horizon for healthcare in Seaford, one current initiative both organisations are working with is East Sussex Better Together. ESBT was launched in August 2014 with the aims of improving and joining up local health and social care services, making people healthier and reducing costs. Further information on the programme and its plans and achievements can be found at .

Councillors and those members of the public present then took the opportunity to ask questions or raise concerns about their healthcare experiences or the local services available. The full minutes of the meeting are available to view on the Council’s website at .

The representatives from both ESHT and the CCG both left with points to take on board and circumstances to look further in to. The CCG took on board suggestions to arrange a public engagement meeting held in Seaford, as well as Eastbourne and Hailsham; this should encourage the improved public engagement and communication channels.

The meeting was held at The View at Seaford Head; a great venue for any committee, public or business meetings. For more details on the venue, contact The View on 01323 890 139.
