Town Council Commits to a Plastic Free Seaford!

Submitted on 25 April 2018 by STC Officers

Seaford Town Council councillors voted unanimously to support the Plastic Free Coastlines campaign through committing to plastic free alternatives and supporting plastic free initiatives within the Town of Seaford; a movement spearheaded by Surfers Against Sewage’s (SAS) and their Regional Representative, Claire Sumners.

All of Seaford Town Council’s properties have been reviewed for the use of single use plastic and action has been taken to start removing these items from Seaford Town Council offices and The View restaurant, bar and function venue.

As well as their efforts to encourage local communities to help keep coastlines clear of litter, Surfers Against Sewage has created a further campaign to help whole towns achieve Plastic Free status.

There are five objectives that Surfers Against Sewage qualify as the criteria in getting towns to successfully become plastic free.  These five objectives all encompass taking local policy action, committing to ditching single-use plastic and making a concerted effort to make alternatives readily available.  It is a Community effort and will involve organising fundraisers and putting together a Steering Group from the Community, combining a range of local businesses, Chamber of Commerce representatives and Town Councillor representation.

Claire from Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) has started to create a Steering Group which currently has 2 of Seaford Town Councillors as named representatives to the group.This group is to help ensure the longevity for the campaign and lead by example; these meetings will be held in public for all to attend.

Once Seaford Town has achieved the five objectives, the town will be awarded the ‘Plastic Free Status’, which is similar to the FairTrade model which Seaford Town has already obtained.  Businesses within Seaford Town will be awarded approved business stickers and certificates.

For more information and any questions or to join the steering group for Seaford Town’s  Plastic Free status please do contact Claire Sumners or visit the Facebook page;

Claire’s next beach clean for Surfers Against Sewage will take place on Sunday 13th May. Meeting at the sailing club from 10am if anyone would like to join her, further details can also be found
