Youth Ambassador Board

Background

In 2009 Seaford became the first town in the South East of the country to elect a Young Mayor. The scheme was set up by the Council in partnership with Seaford Head School, with past Mayor of Seaford, Councillor Carolyn Lambert, working closely with the school and youth of the town to get the scheme up and running.

Over the years, the scheme saw 15 young people serve a term as Young Mayor of Seaford, working alongside the Mayor of Seaford at council meetings, with charities and in the community.

In 2024, the Town Council reviewed the scheme, resulting in the adoption of an enhanced offering to younger people by creating a Youth Ambassador Board. Rather than only appointing one or two young people each year to be the voice of younger people in the town, the Youth Ambassador Board enables the Town Council to work with and reach more younger people and involve them in Town Council projects and services.

Youth Ambassador Board

Seaford Town Council wants to give the young people of Seaford the opportunity to have their say on decisions made by the local authority. The Town Council wants to hear what young people want – first hand as well as help to prepare future leaders.

A Youth Ambassador will:

  • have the chance to be the voice of young people in Seaford and to help the Town Council improve and shape its services and facilities;
  • be invited to see first-hand the work of the Town Council;
  • present the views of the young people of Seaford on upcoming projects;
  • discuss Town Council projects, facilities and consultations, feeding back experiences and
    opinions.

In turn, the Town Council can offer Board members the opportunity to learn the work of the Town Council and its processes and to gain experience in engagement, consultations, and voluntary community work which  can be added to future school, college, university or work applications.

The Youth Ambassador Board will run alongside the academic year from September to July each year and previous Board members will be welcome to apply to be a part of the Board for the following year too if they wish.
