Seaford Town Council has approved an exciting new initiative to improve waste management along the town’s seafront, with the introduction of smart, solar-powered compaction bins set to be trialled this summer.
At its Full Council meeting on 29 April, the Town Council agreed to implement a trial of 13 “Big Belly Smart Max” bins along the promenade from June through to September. The move forms part of the Town Council’s Strategy Programme 2025-2027, which outlines a phased approach to enhancing the management of seafront waste facilities.
These innovative bins use solar power to internally compact waste, significantly increasing how much they can hold. Designed with a fully enclosed disposal system, they help to contain waste and prevent access by seagulls and other animals. Smart sensors provide real-time information on fill levels and usage, enabling more efficient collection. With a capacity around five times that of a traditional bin, these bins are expected to reduce instances of overflow, minimise litter along the promenade, and limit disruption caused by scavenging birds and animals.

Throughout the trial the Town Council will use the smart bins to measure usage, capacity needs, and performance in real-world conditions. By standardising the waste provision during the trial, the Town Council can gather reliable data to determine whether this solution effectively meets the town’s needs and supports a cleaner, more efficient seafront in the long term.
A spokesperson from the Town Council has said: “We encourage everyone visiting our seafront to take their waste home with them whenever they can. At the same time, we know that good-quality bin provision is vital. This trial will help us understand how these smarter bins can support a cleaner environment and ensure we’re providing the right solution for residents and visitors.”
The bins are being provided by Future Street as part of a free trial, with the Town Council covering only installation/removal and emptying costs.
Following the trial period, the Town Council will review the results in autumn 2026 to inform decisions on a long-term solution for seafront waste management.
