We have become aware that the salvagers assigned to recover the shipping container from the beach below Seaford Head have used Hope Gap Steps to access the beach. This was not approved by the Town Council and we have been in touch with the company to stress that the steps are unsafe and cannot be used in any situation. We have now agreed alternative and safe access to the beach for them to continue with the removal of the containers and associated waste.
The steps have been resecured and must not be used, as doing so would constitute a trespass and pose a risk of further collapse.
We will continue to work closely with the salvage company and Lewes District Council to ensure that the debris from the containers is cleared as soon as possible.
